PEP
(Post-exposure Prophylaxis)
What Is PEP?
PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is an antiretroviral drug for HIV-negative people who have had a recent, single high-risk contact. Taking PEP can protect you from becoming HIV positive by preventing the virus from replicating within your body.
When should you take PEP?
Who should take PEP?
People who are HIV-negative, or unaware of their HIV status who think they have been in contact with HIV within the past 72 hours should take PEP. Contact events can include:
- Sexual contact (for example, a condom break with a partner of unknown HIV status or a partner with HIV who is not undetectable)
- Use of shared needles, syringes or other equipment used to inject drugs.
- Sexual assault. Click here for more information on forensic exams.
- Instances of workplace contact such as a needlestick injury.
