Take Action
GET TESTED
Free at-home test kits are available to those living in the metro New Orleans area, at least 14 years of age and able to take a HIV test within 10 days.
Free services and resources are available for individuals who test positive or negative for HIV.
We need everyone’s support to end HIV. Everyone is impacted. We can all help end HIV stigma through our words and actions in our everyday lives. Lead others with your supportive behaviors.
PREVENT INFECTION
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a daily pill or bi-monthly injection that reduces the risk of getting HIV by 99% and is available at no extra cost to individuals who qualify, which is most people.
PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is a pill given after a possible contact with HIV to prevent the infection from taking hold in your body. Contact with HIV is a medical emergency because HIV establishes infection very quickly, often within 24 to 36 hours after exposure. It is critical for a person who has been in contact with HIV to seek care within 72 hours of the potential contact.

HIV TREATMENT
Treatment allows people living with HIV to maintain an undetectable status by taking HIV medication consistently.
An undetectable status means they would have zero risk of transmitting HIV to others through sex.
The treatment for HIV is called antiretroviral therapy (ART). ART involves taking a combination of HIV medicines (called an HIV treatment regimen) consistently.
Most people can get the virus under control (undetectable) within six months, which means they are no longer able to pass on the virus. Taking HIV medication does not prevent transmission of other sexually transmitted diseases.

What Is U=U?

U=U stands for
Undetectable = Untransmittable
This means that if a person who is living with HIV achieves and maintains an undetectable viral load (the amount of HIV in the blood), they cannot sexually transmit the virus to others.

U=U is based on substantial scientific data

The message of U=U is important to reduce the stigma of those living with HIV/AIDS
