HIV TREATMENT

Treatment allows people living with HIV to maintain an undetectable status by taking HIV medication consistently.

An undetectable status means they would have zero risk of transmitting HIV to others through sex.

The treatment for HIV is called antiretroviral therapy (ART). ART involves taking a combination of HIV medicines (called an HIV treatment regimen) consistently.

Most people can get the virus under control (undetectable) within six months, which means they are no longer able to pass on the virus. Taking HIV medication does not prevent transmission of other sexually transmitted diseases.

GET INTO TREATMENT

Getting treatment is now easier than ever in the New Orleans area! Treatment as Prevention (TasP) is a vital part of ending new HIV infections. There are 11 agencies that provide care and services for people living with HIV, including 7 agencies that provide primary care services. Find your service provider now!

Call or text (504) 884-3307 to get connected to care today.

What Is U=U?

U=U stands for
Undetectable = Untransmittable

This means that if a person who is living with HIV achieves and maintains an undetectable viral load (the amount of HIV in the blood), they cannot sexually transmit the virus to others.

U=U is based on substantial scientific data

The message of U=U is important to reduce the stigma of those living with HIV/AIDS

PREVENT INFECTION

PrEP or pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a daily pill or bi-monthly injection that reduces the risk of getting HIV by 99% and is available at no extra cost to individuals who qualify, which is most people

PEP or post-exposure prophylaxis, is a daily pill or bi-monthly injection given after a possible exposure to HIV to prevent the infection from taking hold in your body. Exposure to HIV is a medical emergency because HIV establishes infection very quickly, often within 24 to 36 hours after exposure. It is critical for a person who has been exposed to seek care within 72 hours of the potential exposure.
